The Pentagon is unlikely to have time to spend all the billions of dollars allocated by Congress to arm Ukraine before President Joe Biden resigns, CNN writes, citing two US officials and three defence department officials.
‘The administration has less than two months to spend nearly seven billion dollars approved by Congress as part of a larger package earlier this year to help Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. The funds allow the Defence Department to send weapons to Kiev from its own stockpile, but its ability to do so is limited by shortages in warehouses,‘ the US publication writes, highlighting that for months now the US’ ability to replenish its own arsenals has been constricted, and this has markedly limited the Biden administration’s assistance to Ukraine.
CNN suggests that Trump is unlikely to continue to provide the same support to Kiev, with national security adviser nominee Mike Walz already mulling several proposals to end the conflict, which the president-elect promised during the campaign to end in one day.
‘Individual military aid packages are likely to increase in size in the time left by the outgoing administration, one military official said, while acknowledging that it would be ‘problematic’ to spend all the remaining funds in such a short time,’ the publication concludes.
